Thanks for connecting and sharing your experience, Candace. I agree with what you’re saying about addiction and recovery being a choice: we can choose to stay trapped on the hamster wheel of misery, or we can choose—each and every day—to get off and stay off. Doing so requires a lot of the recovering—tolerance of pain we’ve long avoided, brutal honesty with oneself, consistent vigilance for threats and self-deceptive thinking, among many other trials. I chose to write this to reaffirm my choice and share the cunning danger of addictive thinking with others. As they say in Trainspotting, “I choose life.”
